About the Film:
Filmed during Gay Pride events across the United States in 1977, Gay USA is a vibrant and emotional time capsule that captures the voices, joys, and political urgency of the LGBTQ+ community during a pivotal era. Directed by trailblazing filmmaker Arthur J. Bressan Jr., this landmark documentary celebrates queer resilience and the unyielding fight for equality at a time when the LGBTQ+ community was facing fierce opposition.

Why You Can’t Miss This:
🌈 Pride Through the Lens – Gay USA is one of the first documentaries made by and for the queer community, capturing the raw energy and courage of a movement in motion.
🎞️ Historic and Heartfelt – Curator Adrianna says: “In the early '70s, the pioneering filmmaking of Arthur Bressan Jr. and Wakefield Poole provided an outlet for queer people to see themselves and their desires reflected back at them on screen, honestly and authentically, through groundbreaking adult films that pushed against artistic and social boundaries. It's no surprise, then, that both filmmakers were also deeply enmeshed in the post-Stonewall gay liberation movement, documenting the joy and resistance on the streets in the early days of what would become one of the most important decades for LGBTQ advocacy in the US. Freedom Day Parade and Gay USA are both essential films in the canon of queer and protest cinema and I'm thrilled to offer our audience an opportunity to see them."

Additional Curator Thoughts:
📝 “As Pride begins in June, having both Gay USA and Freedom Day Parade provides us with two important documentaries from the 1970s. Both capture the courage of LGBTQ activists as well as everyday citizens who refused to be silenced during the height of the anti-LGBTQ landscape.” – Cathy
💬 “This film is a powerful reminder that Pride is both a celebration and a protest. Gay USA gives us an intimate, street-level view of our collective history—one that still resonates deeply today.” – Alessandra
